I did not have many languages problems because you can always make yourself clear with body language. But sometimes it took a while. I am happy that I learned some Hungarian, when I travelled through north-east hungary it was very useful because many people only speak hungarian.

I would have liked to have a couse in Hungarian but since I arrived here one month after the course started I decided not to take part but to try to learn the basics by myself, which was a little bit hard since I could only fing books totally in Hungarian.

I was surprised that so few people spoke English-- my own fault cos I never learnt German though. Hungarian is not easy, but it is worth learning as much as u can, cos it makes life easier and peole really appreciate the effort.

The teachers spoke to me in English or German. If they couldn´t say something they asked another student to translate. People at the university were helpful and tried to find a way to communicate. It would´ve been nice to be able to speak more with other students who seemed very friendly but we didn´t share a same language. Anyway English is not my first langauge either!
In Hungary people don´t speak very much English and in shops and railway-stations I usually tried to cope in Hungarian. Finding an apartment indipendently was very difficult because of the language and it took some time, but luckily we met some helpful Hungarians and managed to find a nice place!

I believe that, for the most part, I could already speak Hungarian rather well, so I had no problems at all communicating or being communicated to, of course that does not mean I did not learn a lot while I was there, and I find that the atmosphere for learning was very pleasant.
