If you can affor one, get a car in order to enjoy the city, its surroundings, and the region you're in.

I shared a pretty spacious, on-campus room with a senior-year student (I was in my junior year). On-campus living was the norm, though most of my American friends tended to live off-campus. Since I had a car, I certainly would've appreciated living off-campus, since this was also my living arrangement back in Antwerp.
