Housing
Type of housing: studenthouse
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: the same as I did
Why?
I would choose again a studenthouse, because this is the best way to socialise and mix with other students, while one can also isolate in his/her room when he/she needs to.

Personal comments
Housing was excellent, organised by a special housing organisation cooperating with the Univ. but acting independently. The housing assistance offered was excellent, since every effort had been done in order to meet one's specific needs&wishes concerning accomodation-and most times these wishes had been met.

Academic
Course recommendations
Comparative criminal law, International Law, African law, Sociology of law: the teachers of all of the above should be proud of their teaching capacities&students who attended their lectures grateful&satisfied indeed. Additionally, take advantage of the perfectly organised library opposite the University: books but also multimedia is there to help you through for your studies. Simply get registered at the library and find all u need by the computer.

Teacher should be more in relation with students. They put all the tasks on the Intranet but there is little contact between teachers and students.

Almost everyone speaks English, which actually makes learning Dutch quite difficult: as soon as they hear you don't speak Dutch fluently, they switch to English... The intensive beginner's course is very useful, even if you don't want to learn Dutch properly. The only place where I had difficulties because I didn't understand Dutch at all in the beginning was the railways, since the announcements in trains and at railway stations were in Dutch only.

To study in Groningen you must speak either Dutch or English, so English is pretty much the language of international students there, even though they come from all over the world. The Dutch people understand and speak english very well, so it is not a problem. In fact, if you wish to learn Dutch (then you're crazy), you will find it difficult because English is not a problem for the Dutch, and in fact most of them enjoy using it from time to time.
