I lived with a host family the first semester and then had the opportunity to live with two international students the second semester. Both experiences were exceptional, and am thankful to have had them. If I had the chance again I would live with stufdents mainly because you have more freedom, more in common with peers, forced to do more for yourself ie: shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc. All of which are learning/teaching methods when liiving in a foreign country.

I know the host family I stayed with was the best in the city. I really couldnt have asked for more. My onsite director did a great job at pairing up host families with students. As far as living in the apt. second semester, it was quite an experience!! Dealing with the landlord, the severe age and dilapidation of the apt...all were priceless learning experiences.

When you share an apartment with another person or more people, you have a unique opportunity to get know people, learn and practice different languages, learn to understand and appreciate differences in culture and customs.

In my opinion, you will be far better off if you try to find accomodation yourself perhaps in the company of another person. It seemed to me that the univerisity could not meet the demand for accomodation on campus and besides it proved relatively easy to find good accomodation for a reasonable price in a centric location.

living in a house seemed to be the best option, and in fact almost the only one. I first looked for a residence, but the university offers very few. Then i looked for a Colegio mayor, which is a kinda residence, but with religious orientation, and it just was 3 times more expensive than a house, was very young, and had just too many rules (be back by 11, can't lock room, etc.) for someone used to autonomy. Anyway, looking for the adds of rooms to rent or appartments and houses to rent is pretty much what every does in granada, and with reason because its efficient. An advice would be to get there one or two weeks before beginning of classes if you want to find something in the best part of the city, which is Albayzin and Realejo, because competition is fierce there.

Private residences in Spain are great because they tend to be 99% Spanish kids, with lots of activities organised there is every opportunity to integrate and make a lot of Spanish friends. On the down side they love to know everyone's stories and living in a single sex residence is not cool. Find a mixed Colegio Mayor are you are laughing. Isabel La Catolica looks good mixed. Spanish are a lot of fun - the Andaluz boys would play guitar and sing flamenco at all our barbeque parties I loved it.

No university accomodation. Arrange in May/June time for a private residence. Otherwise arrive a couple of weeks early and really beautiful places can be found around Plaza Nueva. Trees are always covered in ads for flat-shares during the first term.

The cost of living in your own apartment in Granada is not prohibitive, provided that you share with others. Then you have the added freedom that comes with living on your own. If you get there early there are some very good deals on apartments.

I have no comment on the university housing. As far as I know it wasn't even open to foreign students.
