Food is so cheap its unreal, and booze too. Take a trip to Carrefour (number 4 bus from the Uni) for en-mass savings! As Spain is still "developing" Telefonica still run the show when it comes to phones, so they can charge pretty high, especially for internatinal calls. NIght life as dirt cheap, even if you;ve just got a £5 you couldgo out for plenty of wine, beer and tapas. although the clubby places tend to be prices similar to the UK.. but your gettin more for your money, which can be a bit easy to forget sometimes! Travelling around Spain is a must.. the Junta organize trips at every puente so go for them, they may sound all arty and borring on the letters, but dont worry about that, we went to Seville, Barca, Cordoba and madrid. Gijon is just an hour or two away and the mountain bus is worth a shot!

Get a Spanish bank account, Banco de Espana make it dead easy and the staff are really helpful. If you are making credit transfers from the UK, you might even bebefit from the exchange rate!

To telephone home can be quite expensive. Phone after 8pm, the rates are cheaper. Nightlife is cheaper, drinks can be expensive in clubs so get a couple of "buckets" before you go dancing.

Get private accomodation as soon as possible (you can easily save 600 Euros per semester just by doing so). You can easily walk to the city centre, if you're not able to do so (for any possible reason, get a taxi, they are quite cheap).

I spend more in travels, because I considered that as I was abroad, it was a real opportunity to discover a country,a culture and people and I had the time. So I visited many places as soon as it was financialy possible.

mobile phone is terribly expensive, food you can get cheap if you compare the prices well. there are many no-brand products that offer a good quality for a low price. however, some supermarket's brands are good in juice&water (e.g. arbol), others in other stuff (e.g. froiz in bread), you should check the competing products. quite different qualities.

I took the opportunity to travel as much as possible whilst I was abroad, hence the increase in spending in this category, but Spain is very much cheaper than England, so I found that most aspects of my life there were less expensive than in England.

In Leon, tapas are free when you buy a drink, so if you're feeling a little low on cash, save money by going out in the evening and getting a free meal with your drinks!
