Great historical school, in need of updates
Ricardo M
Portugal, Graduate

Overall
Coimbra and the country are proud to have one of the oldest universities in Europe, the widely known University of Coimbra. Reformed long ago, the Law Faculty is the oldest in the country and a living museum. Great traditional student life is a motive to see the city in first person. It is truly magical and centuries of teaching are still present today.
In terms of teaching, it has the same flow. The Law course is old fashioned and doesn't follow the established rules of practical law, that are taught in Lisbon or Oporto. Coimbra school needs to update itself to our times, refreshing its course with new ways and methods of teaching that can prepare the students to an everyday life in the field of law.

Don't expect to find the Oxford of Portugal. They might call it that, but it isn't. Yes, it is old and the old university is beautiful (if you study law, you're lucky to have lessons there!), but the level of education isn't Oxford-wise!

Don't expect to find a big city, when you go to Coimbra. It's small, but cosy! It's easy to meet other foreign students. You'll learn to appreciate the academic traditions, although they might seem odd in the beginning. Visit Lisbon, it's a beautiful city and easy to reach by bus (or train, but bus is cheaper). Go to Figueira da Foz, by train, and enjoy a walk along the beach in February! And just enjoy your stay, it's worth it!

That Coimbra in Sundays become a ghost city! The streets are empty and few people are outside. So, it is not so good idea to arrive on Sunday!

Here it is a short list of best places in Coimbra with a short description: 1)TROPICAL: placed in "praça da republica"; is a cafè where lots of students meet to get a coffee or a beer in almost every hour of the day till night. 2)0 Zé: placed in "rua da matematica", is a small place where peolpe meets usually from 22:00 to 02:00 to get some drinks before starting the nightlife. 3)VIA LATINA: placed near "praça da republica",is a disco with good dj's and goog vibrations. On friday electro music with some drum'n bass. 4)QUEIMA DAS FITAS: an event starting on the firt tuesday of may and absolutely to not miss. It's a sort of students festival during one week. The best day is the thursday when take place "o cortejo",a march of trukcs full of students (like carnival) that offer beers and many other alcoolics for free. The city get full of people, children and old men too.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
This time, I had to share my room with someone else, next time, I would like to have my own room. But the rest was okay, that is, having to share the kitchen etc. I think the best possibility for me to have my own room would be in an apartment.

Personal comments
The accomodation was old and far away from the university ( 20 minutes walk ), not to mention far away from the center ( 30 mintues walk ). However, everything was clean and worked ( washing machine etc. ). Besides, I liked living in a house with other Portuguese girls. Because of this I was forced to speak Portuguese.
