My main objective in travelling to Coimbra was to familiarise myself with the Portuguese language before starting my undergraduate degree in Bristol (UK). Although understandably nervous about not speaking Portuguese upon arrival, living in the country and having to cope with situations immediately helps enormously. My other languages helped a lot too.

since i arrived in portugal with good knowledge of portuguese and since there were many other internation students, i didnt come across almost any difficulties concerning the language and communication

It got easier every day, but sometimes it was hard to have to listen to Portuguese in class for 8 hours a day. I was surprised I could actually speak Portuguese so good already, but I still feel I have learned a lot.

Portuguese people are very warm and kind, and they always helped me! I had a very nice neighbour that used to take me to the groceries and help me out with the language! They are very good people, always there.

Exchange students talk english between them because most of them don't know portuguese at all. That doesn't help you improve the language of course.

I am half brazilian, so i already spoke portuguese, the problem was the slang because brazilian and portuguese are a bit different. anyway after 2 months i was speaking as a portuguese
