There are more places which are worth seeing and events which are worth visiting. If I had to choose one pub, it would be Klein Koeln in Friesenstr., the most important event in Cologne is the Craneval.

i had no problems getting people to speak german with. I joined the Christian Union (SMD in Köln) and had lots of German friends as a result. so i recomend joing a soceity or club to make local friends.

The Belgischen Viertel centred behind Rudolfplatz is a great place for a night out, otherwise Barney Vallelys in the Altstadt is a great, smallishish Irish pub which shows all the English football.
