As far back as 1080, the University, called then l'Ecole d'Angers, was already widely known throughout France. In 1364, Charles V created the University.
The french university system was dismantled by French Revolution in 1793. However Angers continued to be an important university and intellectual center. In 1971, with the unification of the different colleges, schools, institutes already in existence, the University was reconstituted to be what it is today.
