Personal recommendation
Don't expect a big university with lots of facilities for the students, lots of parties everywhere, lots of student's movements. Lille1 is a good, friendly university if you are looking for a nice place to study, to meet other foreign students (there are about 300 Erasmus students every year, so it's fine to know everyone), to improve your French, to travel in the neighborhood, ...

DEUST MIR, formation polyvalente et professionnalisante
Quentin D
France, Undergraduate
, 2020
Overall

I integrated the University of Lille 1 as part of a PhD Excellence Eiffel grant I was generously selected for by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Already a faithful aficionado  of the French culture, from painting to literature and philosophy, and inspired by the new learning opportunities, I decided to develop and finish my PhD work at this institution. If you are patient and keep an open eye, everyday human interactions to the research synergies at the University of Lille 1 are a source of enrichment. Learning about and from others, but mostly about yourself...

Globalement satisfaite

Overall

Personal comments
Seeing things retrospectively, everything was great. Still, any beginning is difficult, especially when you are in a foreign country and you are faced with new, different behaviors. Thus, although my knowledge of French language was significant, the first days spent in Lille seemed everlasting. This tendency would become even more obvious when communicating with native speakers of French, so with people that couldn't possibly understand your uneasiness in expressing yourself in their language. But, as I was living on a campus, with students from all over Europe, the uneasiness had soon melted away; the desire to communicate and friendship tied us more closely than the language barrier could ever separate us. Consequently, I soon started to act naturally in any situation, to be myself, both in communicating with teachers and administrative staff, as well as with friends and other students.

Personal spending habits
The amounts I spent while living in Lille were overall higher than my normal spedings at home. The causes for such a difference in the expenditure level were either the difference between the standards of living (for accommodation, the rent being more expensive than in Romania) or the fact that I've travelled more than I usually do in my own country. During my staying in France, I had a great chance to visit new places, both in France and the neighboring countries.

Personal comments
Fortunately, no negative surprises. And, due to the small amount granted under the Tempus scholarship, no pleasant surprises either; still, the food is very cheap, the libraries are full of good books and you can have fun even by not spending too much.
