something amazing about the Netherlands (or at least Amsterdam) is that everybody there is fluent (almost biligual) in English, even the people working in the street or in the supermarkets. So you can do everything with English. The drawback is that you're not prompted to learn Dutch...

Highly recommendable is the Café De 2 Prinsen on the corner Prinsengracht/Prinsenstraat. It is a student place for mainly Dutch student (good place to meet locals) and they give student reduction on beer and wine and have a good selection of music. Small but very cosy and nice.

it's HARD to learn Dutch here - because even if you try to speak it, the Dutch reply in English (almost everyone speaks it here - if you don't speak Dutch you can only have problems in the suburbs/poorer districts - where the immigrants live - they do not ALWAYS speak English)
