dutch is really hard to learn and almost useless since everybody in any situation you can imagine will be able to speak some english. the courses aren't free and have a limited number of places.

The University doesn't take care of it directly, they put you in contact with a non-profit housing company which is pretty efficient and provides wonderful accomodation.

Nice places for a coffee/beer: De Prins on Prinsengracht, De Jaren close to Muntplein, the open-air caffe behind Westerkerk, etc...
