Why?
Because I loved to share house with other Irish or non-Italian house-mates. If I had chosen a campus accomodation, I would have had to book in advance without seeing the place, probably I would have spent more, and most of all I would have had more chances to live with other Italian students: likelihood that I wanted to avert, as my priority was to improve my English fluency as far as I could.

My comments refer to the second house I moved in. I spent the first 3 months in another place which was worse than the second one, in terms of costs, location and room. My second accomodatio was far better. It was just 3 minutes walk from University, the landlord was polite and helpful, my housemates - 2 Irish and one German PHD students - were the nicest girls I could have ever shared the house with. My room was quite roomy, it had a mansard roof and a wooden floor (there was no carpet). Forniture was all new, and the room walls had been just painted before my arrival. as far as the rent is concerned, the price was quite competitive (325 Euro per month, plus electricity and gas bills).

Accommodation on campus is quite expensive in Cork and the rooms are quite small. The appartments have a kind of clinical atmosphere. The appartments are usually well-equipped (kitchen - to share with three to five people -, dishes etc. What's missing is a washing machine and a dryer. The laundrette is very expensive. Most important for me, if you search for a house on your own you can choose your housematesand you are more flexible concerning the arrangements with the landlord. On campus for exapmle there's no refund if you want to change accommodation in the middle of the term (you always have to pay in advance).

I was lucky to find some nice housemates and we rented a quite big perfectly equipped house, located in Sunday's Well and with a wonderful view to the River Lee. The distance to UCC was - in the eyes of our Irish fellows - quite big: 15 min walk to the Main Quadrangle.

Because one gets more involved in the on campus activities, which means more integration into the system. Moreover, the co-tenants would all be students from all over the world, hence another opportunity for multicutural integration.

The housing system of UCC is the same with that of German universities in that there are a lot of hostels that are located very close to the university's main building, however, I would not call that an on campus system given the fact that they are not located at the same place. These hostels, unlike in Germany, are run by different institutions. But most of them are controled by UCC accommodation office, for more information go to this link: http://www.ucc.ie/en/CurrentStudents/StudentServices/AccommodationServices/.
