I wish I had known...
I can't remember anything specific that I wish I had known before going. I know I ran into some surprises along the way but none were important enough that I remember them. It is better not to know everything before you go. Some things need to be discovered, rather than just recognized.

Personal recommendation
The university is very prestigious. It expects a lot from its students and gives a lot in return. I appreciated the academic independence that is fostered there. Professors expect students to take the initiative in their studies, giving them a wide knowledge base in a subject area and then allowing them to pick areas of special interest for in-depth study.

Take weekends and less-busy days to travel around the country. It is relatively easy to get around and there are many towns, fishing villages, and points of historic interest to explore. Edinburgh itself is a beautiful city. I got into the habit of avoiding the bus because it was much more memorable to walk and enjoy the city.

Buy waterproof clothing cos it rains a lot and it's too windy for an umbrella most of the time.

Even though the year was great, I'm disappointed that my home university won't give me credit for most of the courses I took, so that academically I "wasted" a year. Personally, it was the best thing I could have done and I would do it again in a New York minute!!!!

Edinburgh is a beautiful city but be prepared for long, dark and windy winters where you are basically confined home. Setting up a bank account requires a lot of effort and is completely useless. A money transfer is more expensive than wihdrawing money with you own card. Try to avoid seeing a doctor there. Try to travel as much as possible. Loch Ness is generally considered a must but St Andrews and the Highlands are also worth a visit. Glasgow is popluar for shopping but personally I did not like it at all.

A great overall experience with some flaws

I studied Accounting & Finance at the Business School and while I do not regret it, there is space for improvement. The course was being reorganised and there were not many accounting courses to choose from, making the course not much more different from the Finance course. The quality of teachers varied as did the quality of the courses - some were very basic while others were well balanced. Unfortunately, my course was not very balanced in terms of participants, resulting in a quota of 70% Chinese students which were not very collaborative or eager to engage in conversations. This resulted in frustrations from some of the teachers as well as from the students and a discussion in the small groups which should be essential in a Master programme did not really take place. Also, compared to the other courses there seems to be less money for value as other courses undertook great trips to London or even to Frankfurt while our programme only did local ones.
Edinburgh itself is of course marvelous and while the weather in winter can be sometimes a bit harsh, it is definetively less rainy than assumed and I had a great time. There is a great startup and tech scene.

While you are in Scotland take the time to travel: I would recomment you to go to Staffa Island (not far from Isle of Mull) just to have the opportunity to see some lovely puffins!!!!
