UMIST (The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) was founded in 1824 as The Mechanics Institute. Although UMIST is now a totally separate and independent university, it maintains a close relationship with the University of Manchester. For example, a number of services are shared between the universities (eg. Accommodation, Careers) and UMIST still awards University of Manchester degrees.
