Excellent, though a shame so much english spoken everywhere. People just lapsed into it. You were thought a bit annoying if you insisted on speaking german.

my language proficiency level was already pretty good, but it's different when you are forced to be surrounded by the language at all time. Ease of speaking, slang, and fluency all increased, as well as the level of my 'book' German.

In the beginning it was difficult to talk german inmmediately and I preferred English, but after a few weeks my German was already better

Mostly I learned a lot reading. Of course I spoke also quite much, but the language improvement concerns mainly vocabulary.
