Banks: Join either Deutsche Bank or Volksbank, I knew several people with problems at Sparkasse, they couldn't use cash machines outwith Freiburg!!!
the phone bill was particularly expensive, as I was calling trans-atlantic all year to keep in touch with friends and family.

find out what the program will provide you with. The UMASS program provided bedding and most of the kitchens were all stocked. Freiburg has many fairs and fleemarkets during spring and fall, which are good sources of 'stuff' for your place.
Food from supermarkets is very good value. Obviously, i was making international calls, which i don't do at home. Travel was expensive as i wasn't there for long enough for it to be worth getting a railcard.

ikea for everything:) but not pots or pans, far too expensive there.
food was a bit more expensive, but also because students eat warm meals in the afternoom at the campus. I spent more in nightlife because in Wageningen there are more cheap student clubs, and most places do not charge you entrance fees
The means are more efficient than in Italy. If somenthing is efficient, it means that there a lot of people that work and the need to be maintened, therefore there are more costes to mantain.
