I wish I had known...
All in all my experience went quite smoothly. I did enough research to settle down and the surprises were minor and a learning experience. I would suggest to do some homework before departure, and then things should work out fine.

Study hard, play hard! (And make sure you schedule your time accordingly. Some courses require a lot of work and need to study ahead of time to do well. This doesn't come easily since there are no assignments, midterms, projects etc during the term)

Germany is located at the center to western europe and there are many many good deals/flights to many different countries. Look around and take advantage of that. The transportation in Europe is also very good to get from one country to another. Be safe, and have fun!

If you are an engineer it is a good university, but the business courses are limited. Language courses are great to both improve your german and other foreign language if you speak one. I took beginners Italian and I learned Italian as well as improving my German.

Travel, because if will never be more available for you to do so. When you're young, it's always more fun, and you see the culture more since you don't have as much money to stay in the 3 or 4 star hotels. Try hard to speak the language you're trying to learn as much as you can, because it's so easy to fall into hanging out with people who speak english.

Try to live in a hall of residence in order to have a more and varied contact with other students, fundamentally with students of your same nationality.

One of the first thing you should to do is to buy a bike. This city is swamped with them. You can go everywhere swiftly and costless. I bought that of mine in a fleamarket and I am very satistied.

It gives you an opportunity to meet and then get to know German students as there aren't many British ones.

The TU Braunschweig is an excellent place to study as an Erasmus student. All the staff are very helpful and make dealing with bureaucracy more bareable. It is also a great place to embrace German culture and it is quite easy to socialise with German students.

That there are very little German language classes here and most people are engineers. Also that they're not very communicable.

As a student of German university u can travel by train in the Niedersachsen region for free, and public transport in Braunschweig is also for free. Its quite handy to buy a bike, as there are bike tracks all over the town, most of the time german students do not join international students comunities.
