I definitely noticed a big improvement in understanding German before and after my experience. This is most apparently in how much I absorbed in lectures during the first compared to second semester. Another thing is, the more you speak, the more you pick up. If I had to do it again, I'd definitely try to speak more.

Very difficult at first to communicate with other German students. They don't speak any slower for you and use slang. University German teaches you literature language and not the real world German.
