In Innbruck there is a dialect spoken which is hard to understand even for Germans. When people where talking dialekt, at least at the beginning, it was a nightmare. Only at the end of the semester could I understand and only if somebody was talking to me. When to locals were talking to eachother like always, it could have been Chinese!!!

It was really important for me to be on a german course for Erasmus, don't miss it. Even if you don't pass on the 1st exam, in which they choose who can stay there learning, you can try to ask to let you be there. It's for free so don't give up. Also important is to be with other erasmus students, there are some who already have a very good knowledge of the language and they speak "hoch deutsch" that means that they speak the german you learn in school, not dialect, and they speak also slower..always important for someone that isn't native speaking:)Never speak in english...you need to improve your german.

Initially very difficult to encourage people to speak german to me, especially other ERASMUS students. After, mainly socialized with Austrian students.

Innsbruck is the capitol of Tirol and "Tirolerisch" can be somewhat more difficult than German. This, however, made it even more interesting to improve my German, to be able to understand and make myself understood in both traditional German-language speaking countries as well as the ones with types of German-dialect.
