Personal recommendation
The recommendation would be not to be shocked by the size of the university and the anonymity of a single student. Also, take your notebook with a WLAN card with you in order to take advantage of the university wireless network.
During my experience abroad, I ...

If you have the opportunity, take your bike with you, Cologne is a city of bicycles.

Academic
Course recommendations
As a CEMS student, there really weren't too many courses to chose among. My recommendation would be to attend the courses having an international aspect, because they were among the best at this university.
My academic experiences
Quality of courses
Variety of courses
Access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with international students
Interaction with local students
Personal comments
The one big problem in Cologne, was that I had to search for all the literature myself. And the library was really large for someone coming from Norway. This took quite a long time in the beginning, but I eventually managed to find what was needed for the different courses. A major improvement would include more specified literature lists.
My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course
Essays and/or projects throughout the course

Academic
Course recommendations
To be honest I rarely went to class. If you want to practice your German I recommend doing a seminar in German for German students. It's a great way to experience their learning environment and meet other German students. If you're doing German literature do a subject taught by Ingo Breuer, he's great!

It was kind of painful doing subjects where your entire grade is based on the final exam because I just never ever showed up to class and had to majorly cram/panic during finals. THANK GOD for retakes ;)

Housing
Type of housing: A room in a 'Wohngemeinschaft'(WG).
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: WG
Why?
A 'WG', which is the normal thing in Germany, is a good thing to get to know people. Mine was a private WG (not in a home from the university), so I got to know Germans and not just other Erasmus-students.

Personal comments
Normally you can get a (quite cheap) room in a home from the university. Some are cool, others are really primitive. Most of them are quite far from the city center. I'm happy I looked for a room on my own (it was a bit more expensive, but the location was perfect).

I had a good time in Cologne: even if it is not a beautiful city, there is a lot to do especially for the students!

Be prepared for a city with all but churches and other exceptions stemming from after the war. City has little apparent charm.
