The University of Lille was founded in 1562 by the Spanish and became French in
1667. Louis PASTEUR became the Science Faculty's first Dean in 1854, which
was to become the "USTL" in 1971, located in the campus in Villeneuve d'Ascq.
The USTL is a public university directed by a President, elected for five years by different university Management Committees. He is advised by a 20 member management team who are responsible for the USTL's activities. The final decisions are made by three committees: the Administration Committee, the Scientific Committee and the Committee of Studies and University life.
