If you can avoid it don't fly in to Gatwick to and the have to take the coach (bus) to Hull. It takes up to 5 hours by train and 8 hours buy bus and asfter an international flight you are exhausted. If you fly into Manchester or Humberside airports International office can arrange to meet you or phelp with transportation (with advance notice).

The faculty are nice and very helpful. Although I advise keeping recieps for every payment you make to the Finance office for Accomadation or tuition fees, or any thing elsw for that matter as they tend to credit the wrong portion of your account. Try to avoid paying them in cash so that you have a record of the transaction. use a credit card ,cheque or a standing order from your bank instead.

Note that almost everything at the university closes for lunch. Especially administrative offices, Due any adminstrative errands between (:30 and 12 Noon and about 2:00- 4:00. If its a Friday get ther before 3:30 The shops in town often close between 4:00 and 5:30.

Academic
Course recommendations
The history and american studies departments are both good and well organized. Unfortunantlythe university has cut funding for degree programs in foreign languages. Hence, access to certain langage courses is more limited starting in thge 2001-2002 accademic year. However the Language Institute is very good and has lots of resources for 60 something languages and they teach beggining through advanced levels in several languages that can be taken as part of a degree or as an extra course. Course are offered in languages as diverse as Spanish, French, Itallian, Japanese, Chinese, Dutch and German to name a few. There is also English for accademic purposes for non native speakers of English.

Note that thge forms and typew of assesment can be diffent depending on your department(s). Ask questions and be sure to follow your departments guidelines. Make sure you find out who your personal supervisor is and how to reach them in case you need to ask for anything In terms of departmental/exams policies. The secrataries in the departments can also be a wealth of info when your stuck and don't know what to do.

Be prepared for a lack of organisation, particularly during registration. It can be frustrating at times, particularly if you come from a big university and are used to things being processed quickly.

I would reccommend it more for it's location than the actual university, but beware of the lack of organisation.

Take advantage of the InterRail passes while you are living in Europe. You can't get them outside of Europe and they are great for seeing a lot of places all at once.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I had the opportunity to share the appartment with 6 native English speakers, while most students who rented an accomodation on campus were living with other Erasmus students. I believe that my choice was the best way to improve my language skills and to be close with natives.

The university was very helpful to provide informations regarding student accomodations, even private ones. According to my own experience, I would recommend candidates to hire a private accomodation, that mostly proved cheaper.
