I was ok in English before going to Manchester as I had already gone to the US and Ireland but to be able to use it as an everyday language is a great asset and I learned more in 9 months than troughout my academic courses at school and university in Belgium.

Didn't understand anything for the first two hours in the city, but got used to it very quickly. Locals are helpful and do not make a problem if you don't understand everything for the first time...their accents might get you confused sometimes though ;)

I have been lucky not only because I have improved my English a lot, but also because Manchester is a cosmopolitan city with people from all around the world and i could get the opportunity to practise spanish and russian too.
