Depending on the visa that you get, the French government may subsidize a little of your housing expenses which is a big help! Make sure you are well informed with this.

Paris is certainly an expensive city, way more expensive than Madrid. Also, since in Madrid I lived in my parents´house, food and accommodation are free. However, telephone expenses were not that high since I already lived with most of my friends and at school yo could meet everyday with everybody without the need of calling ahead.

Don´t get too carried away by "Paris la Nuit". You can have a great night but it can also empty your pockets! And never have a Coke in any of the terraces in Champs Elyssees

I did some consultancy work in my host university doing research (mainly phone/internet) for outside companies which paid quite well but the money did not follow as swiftly as is first indicated.
