Integrated learning
KC B
United Kingdom, Undergraduate
Architecture, 2019
Overall
Sheffield Hallam University is great in that we are not only taught how to be good architects but we are being pushed to be great 'environmental' architects. We are learning how to build and design sustainable structures and we are being taught alongside that, how to be very aesthetic and very functionalist. The lecturers are very helpful in showing us precedents and examples of good sustainable architecture. We learn about techniques which can minimise the use of energy to keep a building cool during the summer and warm during the winter. The course also integrates necessary software design, meaning that once you graduate, you leave with a well rounded knowledge of architecture from deigning on paper to designing on software and from designing an aesthetic functionalist exterior to designing a pleasing interior.

Cons
you have to purchase your own materials for drawing, and for making models

Overall
Upon taking my BA degree in Film & Media Production I was met with incredibly knowledgeable and passionate lecturers who helped make the course that much more enjoyable.
The facilities are well maintained and the equipment for students to hire out for their projects are above average, allowing you to partake in all activities effectively enough.

I wish I had known...
I did not know that there is quite a lot of course work to do. Most of it was based on writing assignments.

A lot of different cultures at the same place
Antoni R
United Kingdom, Undergraduate
Economics, 2021
Overall
The university approaches most modules in a more practical way rather than a purely theoretical way and I think that is really useful for the students, it makes it easier to engage and you really feel that you are learning something.

Pros
Practical approach
Cons
Too many mandatory modules (not enough elective modules)

Personal comments
The housing at the sheffield hallam university is managed by the accommodation office. For international student there is a chance to apply for a university accomodation prior arrival, but I choose the way of finding a house in the so called 'house hunting week'. Therefor the office offers trips to houses, owned by scrutinised landlords.

Personal comments
The understanding in the lecturs was ok at the beginning and I think I improved every week, same in written assignments. The communication with english students coming from the south was better than with people from the north. After few month I understood as far as possible the Yorkshire accent, but to be honest, I guess I will never know which bargain the cashiers at WHSmith wanted to offer me.
