I spent more overall in most categories because I tried to do as much as I could being in a new country and experiencing new things. International calls became something of a regular occurrence (which it isn't so much at home), I went out nearly eveyr night so nightlife was definitely a huge expense, I also travelled a number of times (to Kiruna, to Are to ski, to Berlin, to Helsinki, to Norway etc.), and the food was just a bit more expensive than usual. My accommodation was really very cheap in comparison to everyone else's - I don't know how that worked, but I'm glad it did! The accommodation is really one of the most reasonable things about Uppsala.

Try to take as much money as you can to experience all the wonderful aspects of Uppsala. Being a student is the most inexpensive way you can do it, but there is so much to do that it will end up costing you a lot of money. But it's worth it!
If you get a phone, there's a huge amount of money that you have to put up at first (kind of like a bond), but you get it back at the end of your stay. There are ways of getting around it (like a Swede nominating you) but when you've just arrived, you don't want to ask big favours of anyone, so most people just pay it up front and then get it back at the end. Buy alcohol from the Systembolaget instead of when you are out at a nation's bar/club.

Although I did spend more than I normally would in most of these areas, it is understandable, as I wanted to take full advantage of being in a new country. That said, bring lots of money to Sweden because it does hurt your pocket book - gotta love those taxes.

Transportation was much more expensive than I expected on several fronts; public busses were incredibly so (even after living in New York City), and buying a bike to get around on is reasonable, but only if your lucky enough to buy just one (buy a good lock).

There were so many opportunities to do new and exciting activities that obviously cost money - I found it difficult to say no on many occassions. At home, I would be more likely to use greater discretion in my decision making.

I made contact with somebody from my host university who was studying at Uppsala before I arrived, and was able to make arrangements to buy some of her essential goods (eg. bike, bedding etc). Made life easier from the outset. I would definitely recommend trying this approach.

Food in Sweden is more expensive than in the Netherlands. I did not alter my eating habits much. Furthermore I cooked for myself most of the time in Sweden while in the Netherlands I have dinner with other students which reduces the expenses.
Telephone: In Sweden I had my own phone.
Accommodation: The price of the room was just higher.
Nightlife: Okay I did get more out in Sweden, even though I did not know that it was possible.
Travel: When you are abroad better take the oppurtunity to see as many things as possible that are nearby.

In some nations it is possible to work in the afternoon during Fika. You don't get paid but after 10 times helping out, you can get a pass with which you can get free food during fika.
For travel find someone with a car that is always cheaper. Stand-by flights are another blessing.

always save up/prepare more money than you think you need, because of travels and holidays. also google up "The Helping Hand", a second hand shop down south of Uppsala which sells EVERYTHING!
